Frequently Asked Questions

SCHEDULING

  • Click Start Here or call Customer Support at 1-844-463-8474 to schedule an appointment.

  • There are typically appointments available within five business days of your completed referral.

  • Both video and telephone appointments are great options. Be assured that the content and the cost of the appointment is the same regardless if you have a video or a telephone appointment. In a video appointment the genetic counselor has the opportunity to use visual aids whereas in a telephone session they cannot. Video appointments are encouraged as they help build rapport between you and your genetic counselor.

  • It depends on the type of appointment you are trying to schedule.

For a Genetic Test Result Review appointment, a test result is required before you can schedule. This ensures your genetic counselor has the appropriate information before your appointment so they can be fully prepared.

For Genetic Counseling with Optional Genetic Testing, a genetic test result is not required.

  • You can change or cancel your appointment directly by logging into your account at www.geneticsmaven.com or by contacting Customer Support at support@metisgenetics.com or 1-844-463-8474.

You can reschedule or cancel your appointment at no charge as long as we receive your request 24 hours before your scheduled appointment. For cancellations requested with less than 24 hours before the scheduled appointment time and for missed appointments, a 50% fee is applied.

  • You have the option to upload it while scheduling your appointment or you can fax it to customer support at 214-543-9895.

  • A PDF version of your test result is preferred for uploading. The document format does not matter for faxing.

Appointment Cost and Insurance

  • A 45-minute appointment with a certified genetic counselor is $175. A summary report of what was discssed during your appointment as well as a personalized three-generation pedigree (as appropriate) is included.

  • Payment is required to schedule an appointment.

  • We accept all credit cards and will email a receipt to you.

  • We do not accept insurance but our services may be reimbursable. After your counseling session is complete, Metis provides a form called a “Superbill” that you can use to submit a claim to your insurance provider directly. If genetic counseling is a covered service and what amount is allowed is based on your specific insurance provider and medical plan. Contact your insurance provider directly to determine your coverage.

preparing for your appointment

    1. Consider where you will be at the time of your appointment. It is best to be in a quiet and private place so you can communicate with your genetic counselor openly.

    2. Sharing relevant family medical history can help your genetic counselor identify if genetic testing is recommended for you based on current professional guidelines. Knowing which members of your family are affected by disease, their age of diagnosis, and if they are living are all important considerations you should ideally be prepared to share with your genetic counselor. Any information you share is considered private and protected by HIPAA.

    3. Obtain a copy of any previous genetic test results you or a family member completed. It is helpful for the genetic counselor to have information about the test performed and the specific result.

  • You can expect an educational and supportive experience with a genetics expert trained in your clinical area of interest. Your conversation will be educational and non-directive so you can pursue the path that is best for you and your family based on your values and comfort level.

  • Yes! As long as you give verbal permission at the beginning of the appointment or provide a HIPAA release form before the appointment, you can have another individual join at no additional fee.

Genetic Counseling and Optional Test Ordering Service

  • No. Genetic counseling provides accurate information about genetic testing and identifies the benefits and limitations of genetic testing for you to consider. There is no right or wrong when deciding to pursue genetic testing; only what is best for you and your family. Your genetic counselor is available to answer any question as you consider the option of genetic testing.

  • There is no pressure! If you prefer to decide later, you can email your genetic counselor once you have decided about testing. Once a decision has been made, your genetic counselor will follow the same steps as if you decided during your appointment.

  • Metis works with multiple genetic testing laboratories to provide several different and applicable test options to you. Your genetic counselor will discuss the appropriate genetic test options with you based on your personal and family medical history. If you decide to pursue testing, your genetic counselor will share with you information about the specific test and laboratory chosen so a sample can be submitted successfully.

  • We are happy to consider any specific laboratory you prefer. Metis Genetics is committed to finding the best option for you. We utilize many different labs that have a proven track record of both quality tests and sound laboratory procedures.

  • Most often, the genetic testing laboratory will send a test kit directly to you once you decide to proceed with testing. Your genetic counselor will review all the procedures with you so you are prepared.

  • You can contact your genetic counselor or the genetic testing laboratory if you would like to cancel your genetic test as long as the test result has not been reported.

  • While turn around times vary by both genetic testing laboratory and genetic test ordered, 10-14 business days is an average time to wait for test results. Your genetic counselor will provide more detailed information about the turnaround time of your specific test result.
